UNESCO and Bangladesh discuss strengthened cooperation on media, digital governance and culture
A UNESCO delegation led by Dr. Susan Vize, Head of Office and UNESCO Representative to Bangladesh, met with Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman, Adviser for Information, Broadcasting and Cultural Affairs, on 16 September 2026 to discuss opportunities for strengthening cooperation between UNESCO and Bangladesh across media development, digital governance, culture and heritage.
The discussion focused on professional journalism, journalist safety and information integrity, including the growing challenges of misinformation and disinformation and the role of Media and Information Literacy (MIL) in strengthening public resilience. The two sides also exchanged views on Bangladesh’s evolving digital governance landscape, responsible AI governance and the ongoing media reform process. UNESCO shared updates on its work with government institutions, civil society and other partners in these areas.
Culture and heritage were also central to the exchange. Discussions explored opportunities for cooperation on a comprehensive National Culture Strategy, safeguarding intangible cultural heritage, UNESCO nomination processes, the Memory of the World Programme and Bangladesh’s creative economy.
Both sides welcomed continued engagement and closer coordination between UNESCO and relevant government institutions. UNESCO reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Bangladesh through technical cooperation, policy dialogue and international knowledge exchange.
The UNESCO delegation also included Farhana Shahnaz, Head of Media Development and Access to Information, and Shakil M. Faisal, Project Lead – Media and Elections.
