The Steel Guitar Hall of Fame has found a permanent home at the Hawaiʻi State Archives, a division of the Department of Accounting and General Services. The move marks a milestone in preserving the steel guitar’s history and legacy.

“We are beyond thrilled to be the new home of the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame,” enthused Hawaiʻi State Archivist Adam Jansen, who has a doctorate in archival studies.

“It’s fitting that an instrument whose locus began in the Hawaiian Islands would now also have its museum located in this same place. Furthermore, the Hawaiʻi State Archives exists to keep records of historical and cultural value. This speaks to both our hearts and our professional mission.’”

The steel guitar was invented in Hawaiʻi in the late 19th century and became one of the first major musical exports from the islands — to an appreciative global audience. Its sound shaped country music, blues, western swing, sacred music, popular music and numerous other genres, making its origins inseparable from its global legacy.
