Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister with Responsibility for Public Affairs and Information, Kwame McCoy, has called on Guyanese to strengthen unity, tolerance and togetherness as the country celebrates Diwali, emphasising that national development depends on the collective efforts of all.

The minister made the call while addressing a gathering at the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) in observance of the Festival of Lights(Diwali), where he highlighted the importance of Guyana’s cultural diversity and shared national identity.

“Togetherness is absolutely important for us in the journey,” Minister McCoy said, noting that Guyana’s continued progress depends on citizens working together towards common goals.

The minister explained that Diwali’s message, light overcoming darkness and good triumphing over evil, serves as a reminder of the values that should guide individuals and communities.

Minister McCoy noted that government’s continued development efforts across all sectors are aimed at ensuring citizens have equal opportunities to improve their lives, achieve success and contribute to national progress.

“Building out the development in all the various spheres of our life, ensuring that all our citizens have the equal opportunity of taking our development upward continuously,” Minister McCoy stated.

Additionally, the minister urged Guyanese to reject prejudice, racism and division, noting that togetherness remains essential to achieving the country’s development goals.

“It is only by us being together that we are able to move swiftly along the development pathway and trajectory,” Minister McCoy said.

In highlighting Guyana’s multicultural heritage, the minister noted that the country’s different ethnicities, cultures and traditions remain a source of strength.

“As we celebrate Diwali, let us therefore commit ourselves to bring a source of light in the lives of others. Let us replace prejudice with understanding, division with unity, and indifference with kindness,” Minister McCoy urged.

Extending Diwali greetings to Hindu brothers and sisters and all staff members of his ministry, the minister wished peace, prosperity, happiness and renewed hope to them.

“May the light of this occasion remind us that whatever our differences are, we are strongest when we stand together. Shubh Diwali, Happy Diwali,” the minister concluded.
